02 / From Las Palmas to Oulu
Created in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria by Asociación ProDocumentales Cine y TV, Canarias Documental is a non-competitive international documentary showcase. It opens a space for reflection and dialogue around memory, identity, the environment, diversity and human rights.
The connection with Oulu began during the visit of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 2031 (LPGC31) candidacy to the opening of Oulu2026, European Capital of Culture, when it brought El Patio and ProDocumentales into contact; in May, the two organisations held an evening of short films, Documentales en Corto, at Valve Cultural Centre, including an online appearance and conversation with one of the directors, and following the success of this first event, the collaboration is growing this autumn into three days of film, dialogue and encounters.
El Patio coordinates the Oulu event and local production, bringing Spanish-speaking cultures into dialogue with Finnish and wider Oulu audiences. ProDocumentales contributes the film programme and workshop expertise; LPGC31 helped initiate and supports this cultural connection.
03 / The stories
Six original voices, from Amazonian earthworks to memory, care and everyday acts of change.

In the southwestern Amazon, academic research has revealed more than 1,000 geometric structures formed by excavated ditches and earthworks. These structures are mainly circular and square, although other forms, including rectangles, ovals and octagons, have also been identified. The documentary presents Indigenous narratives about these pre-colonial geometric earthworks, recent findings from international research teams, and the perspectives of Brazilian government officials and farmers who currently live at the sites. It also highlights current challenges related to protecting Indigenous cultural heritage and biocultural landscapes.

A hybrid between documentary and the discipline of performance itself, moving between documentation and creation. The film uses elements and techniques associated with cinema, including archival material and recordings of Ferrer's artistic practice and her reflections on specific aspects of her work. These are combined with animation and original creative material produced for the film.

Versus interweaves ritual gestures, oral memory and visual experimentation in a poetic and performative cinematic experience. Set in the Lucanian highlands, a procession of women carries out acts of care upon a wounded landscape. The sound draws on 1954 field recordings by Carpitella and de Martino, reinterpreted to question the image. The film enters into dialogue with Luigi Di Gianni's ethnographic cinema, moving beyond the documentary framework to create a hybrid space where cinema meets visual art, anthropology and performance, and where new forms of meaning are explored. Versus transforms landscape, gesture and sound into an immersive exploration of memory and care.

David and Pablo, who are responsible for the Green Plan at a school in Madrid, prepare to cycle 100 kilometres on an old tandem bicycle. The challenge aims to raise enough funds to buy a new tandem for the school.

The documentary explores the drinking-water shortage affecting Guatemala. It centres on testimonies from people facing the consequences of environmental degradation and the unequal distribution of water, as well as Indigenous leaders defending ancestral rights to natural resources.

Maruca is a woman who has lived her entire life in the same village, Tejeda. Through an exploration of her work as a local healer, she connects tradition, knowledge of her land, and the role of women in caring for the family and the community.
